Children from St. Stephen’s CE Primary in the borough will be bringing a slice of Victorian life to Lewisham Shopping from Saturday 25th October for Create-a-Quest, when they put on a mini exhibition that forms part of the national Arts & Kids Week campaign.

Year 5 children (aged 9 to 10) from St. Stephen’s CE Primary school in Lewisham have been working throughout the summer with the Horniman Museum and Lewisham Shopping on the Create-a-Quest project.

Children and their teachers were introduced to Victorian life in a series of workshops by arts professionals based at The Horniman Museum. The Create-a-Quest project was initiated and funded by Lewisham Shopping to expand the opportunities for local children to enjoy and participate in the arts.

The Horniman Museum worked with teachers and pupils to help them explore Victorian life by drawing inspiration from the museum’s extensive collection. The children have created their own interpretation of a Victorian street, which reveals not only the positive innovations of the period, but also the poverty and challenges facing children living in Victorian London.

Say Paul Redden , Centre Manager at Lewisham Shopping: “This event is the first step in the right direction of getting to children to learn about and appreciate history and Lewisham Shopping is happy to be a part of that”.

Says Shelly Page, teacher from St. Stephen’s CE Primary: “Through the Create-a-Quest project our pupils have been able to experience and understand what life would have been like for children of their own age in Victorian London.

“The children worked with their teachers and the Horniman team to let their imaginations take them on a journey back in time. I am sure that modern day Lewisham residents will delight in the children’s interpretations of the good, bad and ugly of Victorian street life!”

The Victorian street will be on display in Lewisham Centre throughout half term week (Saturday 25th October – Monday 3rd November).

Little Shopper Stay Safe wristbands and information will also be provided to parents and children’s guardians at Create-a-Quest. Little Shopper is a national child safety scheme by Land Securities.
